SWA 10

All three editorial articles from The State newspaper are examples of rhetorical style. They all share the same outlook on the situation, that there is a major problem of homelessness in Columbia, but they find different ways to approach it. The editorials contain the author’s feelings and possible proposition that the author is informing the public about. Also, the articles contain factual evidence about homelessness in Columbia as a way of connecting to the audience’s emotions. The first article discusses the Columbia City Council’s denial of Oliver Gospel Mission’s request to have property rezoned in order to relocate to Barnwell Street and expand its services. The second article also discusses Oliver Gospel Mission’s effort to relocate and how local leaders, churches and residents support relocating Bantu refugees to the city. The third article is focused on the business aspect of helping and fixing the homelessness problem in Columbia. Business’s such as Four Corners of Hope and The Salvation army are coming together to help the community fix the problem, even if the city council won’t. All three articles are similar because they all have the same goal in mind; to fix the homelessness problem in Columbia. They differ in their approach because they use different tactics and discuss different sides of the problem and how it is trying to be fixed. All of the articles use rhetorical aspects in different ways making each a very effective editorial.
